Local Number Portability (LNP), or Mobile Number Portability (MNP), enables end users to keep their phone number when switching service providers. Mandated by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) through the Telecommunications Act of 1996, the act was designed to increase competition among Service Providers, stimulate demand for telecommunications services, and encourage technology innovation. Today, nearly everyone in the U.S. can port their phone number.
Number Portability Administration Center (NPAC) supports the implementation of
Local Number Portability and is the system used to facilitate number porting in
the United States. Comprised of seven regional systems across the U.S., the
NPAC manages the number portability processes of wireline, wireless, Voice over
Internet Protocol (VoIP), and IP communications.
On August 8, 2016 iconectiv and the North American Portability Management LLC, (NAPM) signed the Master Services Agreements (MSA) for each of the seven U.S. Number Portability Administration Center (NPAC) regions, officially establishing iconectiv as the next Local Number Portability Administrator (LNPA) in all U.S. regions. iconectiv continues to work with the industry, regulators, and Neustar, the incumbent administrator, to ensure a smooth transition.
